Essential repairs and refurbishment at St Eugene’s Cathedral

Since May 2015 a programme of essential repairs and refurbishment has been undertaken by St Eugene’s Cathedral.  The work is primarily associated with damage caused by the entrance of moisture to the fabric of the building affecting internal finishes, stained glass windows and external masonry.  In particular the stained glass windows on the western wall (St Columba and St Patrick), the bell tower, sacristy and choir areas have been badly affected.    There is also the need for structural repairs to areas of the bell tower.  Cast iron rainwater goods and access ladders are being replaced or repaired as necessary. The work has only been made possible because of the award of their maximum grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund of £250,000 (Grants for Places of Worship) as well as a grant of £73,500 from the Department of Environment.  The estimated cost is £353,000 and works are programmed to complete at the end of October (weather permitting).  Fr Paul Farren, Administrator of St Eugene’s Cathedral, said ‘I am delighted that we can carry out these necessary repairs to this most significant building. We are deeply indebted to the Heritage Lottery Fundfor their maximum grant and to Minister Mark H. Durkan and his department for their ongoing support and funding.
